Background of the Study
Physical education, traditionally regarded as an extracurricular activity, is increasingly being recognized as a core subject that contributes to the holistic development of students. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, the perception of physical education among students has emerged as a critical area of study. As educational paradigms shift towards a more integrated approach, physical education is viewed not only as a means to promote physical fitness but also as a vital component in developing social skills, emotional resilience, and overall well-being (Abubakar, 2023). Students' perceptions of physical education can influence their engagement, motivation, and academic performance, making it essential to understand how this subject is valued within the broader curriculum. The incorporation of physical education into the core academic framework reflects a growing awareness of the importance of balanced education that nurtures both mind and body. Furthermore, modern educational theories emphasize the role of physical activity in enhancing cognitive function and reducing stress, which in turn supports academic success. In Lafia, students have reported varying attitudes towards physical education, with some recognizing its benefits in promoting teamwork, discipline, and mental alertness, while others perceive it as less important compared to traditional academic subjects (Chukwu, 2024). This divergence in perceptions highlights the need for a comprehensive evaluation of how physical education is integrated into the curriculum and how it is experienced by students. The use of qualitative and quantitative research methods will provide a nuanced understanding of students' attitudes and the factors that shape their views on physical education. Factors such as teaching quality, facility adequacy, and the perceived relevance of physical education to future career prospects are likely to influence student perceptions. In this context, the study aims to evaluate the current perceptions of physical education as a core subject and to identify areas for improvement. By examining students' opinions, the research will contribute to the development of more effective teaching strategies and curricular reforms that can enhance the value of physical education in Lafia. Ultimately, the findings are expected to inform educational policymakers and stakeholders about the significance of integrating physical education into the core curriculum and its potential to improve overall student development (Danladi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although physical education is increasingly recognized as a core subject, students in Lafia Local Government Area hold diverse perceptions regarding its importance within the academic curriculum. A significant problem is that many students regard physical education as less critical than other core subjects such as mathematics, science, or language arts. This perception is often influenced by traditional views that prioritize academic achievement over physical development, leading to lower engagement and participation in physical education classes (Ibrahim, 2023). Inadequate facilities, limited qualified instructors, and a lack of innovative teaching methods further exacerbate negative perceptions, reducing the subject's appeal and perceived relevance to students' future prospects (Umar, 2024). Moreover, the existing curriculum may not effectively communicate the broader benefits of physical education, resulting in a disconnect between its potential contributions to holistic development and students' experiences. The absence of empirical data on students' perceptions of physical education in Lafia makes it challenging for educators and policymakers to address the underlying issues. Without a clear understanding of how students value physical education, efforts to enhance the subject may fail to achieve desired outcomes. Additionally, socio-cultural factors and peer influences play a role in shaping student attitudes, further complicating the implementation of effective physical education programs. Consequently, the full potential of physical education as a core subject remains under-realized, and its benefits to student well-being and academic performance are not fully exploited. This study seeks to evaluate students' perceptions of physical education in Lafia Local Government Area, identifying key factors that influence their attitudes and proposing strategies to enhance its status within the curriculum (Bello, 2025). Addressing these issues is essential for fostering a more balanced educational experience and ensuring that physical education receives the recognition it deserves.

• H3: Implementing targeted curricular reforms will improve students' perceptions and engagement in physical education.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines students' perceptions of physical education as a core subject in Lafia. The research provides valuable insights into the factors that shape student attitudes and the overall effectiveness of the physical education curriculum. The findings will inform educators and policymakers on necessary reforms to enhance the status and delivery of physical education. Additionally, the study contributes to the broader discourse on holistic education by highlighting the importance of integrating physical and academic development. Ultimately, the research supports efforts to create a more balanced and enriching educational experience for students in Lafia, for future success.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating students' perceptions of physical education as a core subject in Lafia Local Government Area. It focuses on the views of students within selected schools and does not extend to teacher or administrator perspectives. The research is confined to the local educational context and considers only factors directly influencing student attitudes towards physical education. Findings may not be generalizable to other regions or educational systems.
